SMWS G1.10  North British grain Sweetness somersaults around the mouth

Very sweet and bourbon-like, the nose delivered vanilla fudge, sugar puffs, toffee, spun sugar, honey and Dr Peppers, but complicated itself with cinnamon stick, lemon, perfumed rice and oak. Water nudged it sideways – lemon to orange, cinnamon to clove, toffee to butterscotch and vanilla fudge to chocolate fudge and ice-cream. That sweetness somersaulted around the palate – cherries in syrup, vanilla cheesecake, caramel sauce, banana toffee, Murray mints – definitely one for a sweet tooth, though clove spice and dry oaky notes provided interest in the finish of what is fundamentally an easy-drinking dram. The distillery address is Wheatfield but it uses maize.

SMWS G3.5 Caledonian grain Chocolate Café Latte

After the first impression on the nose neat of apple and pear juice as well as buttered corn on the cob, the aromas turned wonderfully sweet; spun sugar, maple syrup waffles, freshly made American pancakes and Turkish delight. The taste was like a super sweet poached pear, pink and white nougat, rosewater and a little spice - a café latte with a cinnamon sprinkling on top. Water turned the nose nutty, monkey nuts as well as a chocolate hazelnut spread on a toasted crumpet, whilst in the finish we found orange chocolate liqueur. On the palate sweet ripe fruits, some oaky flavours and butter scotch. This very velvety and soft example comes from an Edinburgh based distillery which shut its door in 1988.

SMWS G7.5 Girvan grain Smoky Werther’s Original

The Panel found themselves transported into a very old and dusty Antiques shop with old wooden floors and big wooden furniture, with lots of brassy and leathery aromas as well as the sweet coal smoke of a distant fire in the air. Fruity and sweet notes slowly appearing, Newberry fruit jellies, Eccles cake and rum and raisin ice cream. The taste has a delicate, well balanced sweet and smoke combination, dusty icing sugar and, if only they would exist, smoky Werther’s Original. With the addition of little water nutmeg and cinnamon next to ripe plums give way to the waxy aroma of a well worn Barbour jacket. To taste thick treacle tart, Seville orange marmalade and dark chocolate ginger.

Sweet and essential aromas of pure lemon oil and fresk cocnut water and the taste had cherry vanilla, Dr. Pepper, pine seed oil and shortbread. Water released bourbon, vanilla extract and flavours of vanilla cream chocolate e’clair

SMWS G11.1 Nikka Coffey grain Tongue tingling intensity!
On first nosing we discovered cherry Bakewell tarts, vanilla icing and foamy banana sweets.  Deeper notes of plum skins, cornflakes and buttery pastry gave way to a pleasing solvent-like edge (pear drops).  To taste, exotic fruits (papaya and guava), rum-like spices, pears in paprika honey and an incredible tongue tingling intensity.  Water brings warmth, roundness and comforting coconut.  The spicy rum character remains while nutty and creamy flavours increase in power.   There’s pistachio ice cream, gingerbread, lychees and pink wafers.  A savoury finish surprises with light notes of sautéed mushrooms and baked brie, balanced by the sweet juiciness of oak.

SMWS G12.1 Nikka Coffey Malt Oh so sweet

Aromas of apple purée and coconut milk soon revealed a fresh oak backbone and vanilla pods in a sugar bowl.  Subtle rancio and musky notes floated along while the sugar became more rich, dark and heady.  The taste was very sweet with powerful vanilla and banana, moving to a chalky and slightly drying finish.  Water saw apple turnovers dusted with icing sugar as a curious coconut and peach smoothie was whizzed up in the background.  Wonderful oakiness (“wrung out staves”), banana chips, Campinos, cloves and banana toffee brought this rollercoaster of sweetness home.

SMWS G13.1 Chita A complete revelation

The Panel were awestruck by this dram of intense beauty. Luscious mango and pineapple juices accompany lychees, Bounty Bars and fragrant lemongrass. The oak is remarkably fresh and fruity with toffee, marshmallows and damson jam. Gingerbread spice is complimented by creamy milk chocolate and impossibly rich vanilla custard. With water, cherryade, butterscotch, orange oil and fruitcake are entwined in seemingly endless complexity. There’s pear crumble, fruit cocktails, coconut and gorse bush and a bourbon vanilla milkshake. Candied fennel makes a brief appearance before plum crumble is served up with a toffee bourbon sauce.

Drinking tip: Give it time and you will be rewarded
