Scapa

"THE Scapa Distillery in Orkney has for the past seven years been worth a
visit only for the vista it affords of the last resting place of the German
fleet, scuttled off Orkney at the end of the First World War.

But that is about to change after the decision by the distillery's owners,
Allied Distillers, to spend £2.1 million bringing the 119-year-old plant
out of mothballs to cash in on the resurgence in sales of single-malt
whiskies.

Allied Distillers - part of Allied Domecq, the world's second-biggest
drinks company with brands such as Beefeater gin and Sauza tequila - is
also planning to invest £1.4 million to save the Glendronach Distillery in
Speyside from closure by replacing its coal-fired stills. The company's
decision to breathe new life into two of Scotland's most famous
distilleries comes on the back of surging sales around the world of single
malts, made from whisky from a single distillery rather than blended from
several plants."
