South Africa's first single malt whisky, rumours of which have caused widespread anticipation amongst the country's whisky lovers, will soon be available under the Three Ships label. Three Ships 10-year Old Single Malt Whisky is the culmination of a quarter of a century's distilling experience at the James Sedgwick Distillery in Wellington.

The whisky, created by master distiller Andy Watts, has warm, unusually deep shades of amber and smoky, peaty aromas that support the complex range of luxurious flavours. "The colour is 100 percent natural," he says, the result of maturation in a varied selection of casks, particularly bourbon and sherry.

At the same time the casks gave the whisky its unique character. "The sherry sweetness is especially noticeable on the palate with hints of toffee and spices in addition to the obvious smoky notes."

The single malt whisky was crafted from a three-year old that showed exceptional promise in the distillery. "For the past seven years we have been developing it to its full potential," says Watts. He believes the style of a whisky is becoming increasingly important as perceptions change and whisky lovers begin to value style rather than age alone, and that this enables Three Ships to compete on the world stage.

The James Sedgwick Distillery was established in 1886 and since the launch of Three Ships over two decades ago it has undergone several upgrades to transform it into a state-of-the-art distillery.

Just 6000 bottles of the 10-year old will be released, but the distillery is constantly experimenting with new styles for possible future special releases. Three Ships 10-year Old Single Malt Whisky will be available from selected bottle stores countrywide by the end of November, and is expected to retail at about R100 per bottle.
