"hmm, apparantly a good cask, lasting for 70 years. Supose you would have used that cask for your 10y bottling. That would mean you could use it 7 times. Every time would give you let's say 300 bottles. So a total of 2100 bottles over the 70 years. Selling for 50,- a bottle would give you 105.000. so I supose the other 840.000 is because it's very special....."

Appearance: The colour of sun-bleached polished mahogany.
Aroma: A mellow nose, at once waxy and fruity; candlewax to the fore initially, which becomes snuffed candle (a thread of smoke), with Maraschino cherries in Madeira cake behind, and after a while an orangey citric note - fresh and juicy, becoming apricot jam. Flaked almonds and whin flowers, becoming light coconut oil.
Taste: Surprisingly lively tasted straight. A smooth, waxy mouthfeel; a sweetish start becoming moderately dry, but not overly-tannic. Dried fig and tobacco notes, and an intriguing light smokiness. A long finish and, for the first time, a hint of planed hardwood in the aftertaste. With a teaspoon of water, the smooth texture in enhanced. The fresh, light sweetness becoming pleasantly sour ('Soor Plooms'), with sooty smoke in the finish.
Comment: Remarkable! No trace of damp wood or must or bung cloth - a delicate, fresh, vital, fruity whisky, but with unusual attributes of waxiness and smokiness - uncommon today, more usual before the 1960s.

Okay, the temptation was too great. I decided to pour a little more than half my 30ml sample last night after coming home from taking my wife out for her birthday. And I decided that I am not going to review this formally, but to rather enjoy it as much as I can and savor the moment of tasting a whisky that's 70 years old.
My informal impressions? I really liked the nose. I never would have suspected it would be this old. Very complex and impressive. Its age shows more on the palate. Past its prime? In all honesty, yes. There's definintely some resinous oak notes in there. Still, it's an entertaining and intriguing dram with redeeming qualities. I enjoyed drinking it. A rare treat.

Her er lidt mere eller mindre uafhængige smagsnoter:
RMW Staff Tasting Notes
Nose: Black Cherries, Orange peel, dark chocolate, some pine resin, notes of dunnage warehouse. Dried fruits "“ apricot "“ sherry influence comes through, then strawberry shortcake and fresh mint leaves. Some rubber, plums and macadamia nuts. All in all a nose to savour "“ very complex and quite incredible for a whisky of this age.
Palate: Oily and buttery, Worcester sauce, earthy smoke. More Orange and dried fruits. Surprisingly bold "“ again, for the age "“ with a very firm, waxy mouthfeel. Wood varnish emerges.
Finish: Long and dry, a touch of heather and spice comes through.
Comments: Still an amazingly vibrant spirit after so long in cask.
